The Migrants Youth Mela, held at Don Bosco NEST (Nilayam for Education and Social Transformation) in Tiruppur, brought together over 1,000 young migrants from diverse states, including Assam, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh. This event created a much-needed platform for migrant youth to showcase their talents, share their experiences, and build community ties in their destination home of Tiruppur.
Migrants living in rented accommodations and hostels across Tiruppur, employed in industries such as Cotton Blossom, KPR, and other textile companies, have arrived from areas including Pollachi, SIDCO, Avinashi, and Palladam. The day began with registration at Payanam, followed by a solemn Eucharistic Celebration led by Fr. Alphonse Robert SDB, Rector of Kotagiri. He emphasized four key principles for peaceful coexistence in Tiruppur: embracing diverse cultures, learning Tamil, pursuing education through correspondence, and upgrading skills to improve career prospects. The spiritual opening set the tone for a day filled with both celebration and critical dialogue.
The organizing team honoured the Company delegates and Salesians during the gathering. Fr. Felix, Director of NEST and Payanam, warmly welcomed the participants and encouraged them to remain joyful and spread happiness wherever they go. He emphasized the importance of education, skill development, and recreation through activities and community engagement.
The thematic sessions on Rights and Job Placement followed, led by Fr. Francis Bosco SDB, National Director of the Don Bosco Migrant Ministry (DB4M). He emphasized the importance of registering for entitlements such as e-Shram, ESI, PF, Abhay Health Scheme, and the One Nation One Ration Card, encouraging migrants to be aware of their rights and access central and state welfare schemes. Fr. Bosco also highlighted emergency support systems and the role of source states, such as Jharkhand and Odisha, in assisting their migrant populations during crises. A key point of discussion was the formation of a Migrant Workers' Association in Tiruppur, aimed at giving migrants a collective voice for advocacy and mutual support.
Mr. Peter and Ms. Marina, representing a job placement network(JPN), introduced registration opportunities for career advancement and skill-based employment pathways. Their insights gave many migrants hope for better job security and long-term stability.
With 20 vibrant stalls featuring games and cultural challenges, the young migrants enthusiastically participated, enjoying traditional games, song competitions, and theatrical performances. The event culminated in a joyous dance celebration, where participants in colourful cultural attire showcased the richness of their native traditions.
The success of the event was made possible by the tireless efforts of Fr. Felix, Fr. Arul Kumar, Fr. Daniel, and Fr. Jude, along with the students of NEST, Salesian Cooperators, and dedicated volunteers from SIDCO and local parishes.
Beyond the entertainment and cultural expression, the Migrants Youth Mela stood out as a significant platform for advocacy. Discussions on fair treatment, safe working conditions, and equitable access to opportunities highlighted the growing need for organized efforts to protect and promote the rights of migrant workers.
